You know the old question "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." This is how you should look at managing your social media. I've said to many that if you let it, social media will consume your day. You go in to update your company Facebook page, and as you're getting ready to move on to the next task, you see a funny meme—or your best friend posted a rant, and the next thing you know, you just lost 30 minutes of your day. Same with Twitter and every other site.

Would you believe that you can monitor your basic social needs in about 10 minutes a day? (One thing to note.. this is not meant to be a comprehensive approach but rather the bare minimum you should be doing if you can't devote a person or department to it.)

managing social media in 10 minutes

Yep. You sure can and here's an example of how.

Facebook: Go to your Facebook business page and see if anyone left any comments or remarks on your previous posts that need to be addressed. Any private messages? Respond to them. Create a post for today. Don't forget to mix it up a little—if you posted a picture yesterday, make it a quote or question today.

Twitter: Check your Twitter feed. Any new followers since yesterday? Check them out and follow them back if they aren't spam. Respond to any retweets or mentions; find a couple of tweets in your stream that you find interesting and retweet them. If you have time, find five new people to follow.

LinkedIn: Head to your LinkedIn account, and again, see if there are any messages directed to you and respond. Review any pending connection requests as well as recommended articles. Congratulate anyone who's received a promotion or taken on a new job.

Other Social Sites: Depending on any other sites you're on, you'll want to check in on these as well. If you're on Instagram, respond to any comments or follows that came in, and choose a new image to post for the day (don't make it the same as the one on Facebook!). If Pinterest works for your company, spend a little time repinning a few pins, and check into who pinned your items. Any new folks or companies you want to follow? Now is a good time!

Of course, all of this depends on which social sites you put the most focus on. If you only do Facebook, then spend your 10 minutes there (same with the others). There will also be days when you'll spend more time, but the intent of this is to keep you laser-focused—get in there, do what you need to do, and then move on with your day and the other tasks that are waiting for you!
