InstaVideo vs. Vine: Which Video App Will Come Out on Top?

Instagram versus Vine

We were all amazed when the Vine application came out, and we could put together a smorgasbord of video on loop for six seconds. The possibilities were endless! You could record a choppy Vine of different images, or simply focus on one theme for the whole six seconds. As a result, Facebook and Twitter became more interesting, because you could connect your Vines through each of your accounts. “Friends, check out this six-second image collaboration that I made! Watch it again and again and be interminably amused!” they would say, but that was before Instagram Video came along…

A few weeks ago, Instagram officially announced that they were adding a “video” feature. The first thought that came into my mind was that of Vine, as I felt the creators of the app shift uncomfortably in their seats from wherever in the world they sat. Then, the blow: Instagram video allows fifteen-second videos with 13 filters and editing.

The even more awkward part? Instagram’s dominance on Twitter is pushing out Vine, which is owned by Twitter. According to Mashable, “Data [by Simply Measured] showed twice as many top 100 brands recently used Instagram Video as Vine.” How can this happen in the week of its brand new debut? Well, Instagram already had loyal followers for the photo feature while Vine was still building its customer base. Advantage: Instagram.

So considering these two applications, you can still use both for business and leisure activity. Vine may be experiencing some turbulence after Instagram video’s release, but it can still be utilized within social media. Here is my breakdown of what you should think about when using each platform:

  • Instagram Video:

    • Editing features - You can say goodbye to just uploading a video without fixing it up first.
    • “Cover Frame”- You can pick what picture still will represent your video, instead of having some random, blurry image. It’s a lot more professional.
    • Filters - You can now personalize your videos even more!
    • Image stabilization - Meant to “smooth shaky footage”- better for your social and business videos!
    • Time - 15 seconds as opposed to 6 seconds
      Business advantage (5/5)
      Leisure advantage (5/5)
  • Vine:
    • A little quicker to get out into the world, as there are not as many features
    • Owned by Twitter, so Instagram video will never be hand-in-hand with that specific platform, unlike Vine
    • Looping: Vine videos play for 6 seconds and loop, unlike Instagram video, which stops after 1 play.
      Business Advantage (2/5)
      Leisure Advantage (3/5)

We can’t completely throw Vine under the bus, as it paved the way for an easy way to upload quick, creative videos. However, Instagram video currently takes the cake for being the king of videos for both our personal and business worlds. It will be interesting to see when, and if, Vine can make a comeback.

Update: Business Insider reported that Vine fired back at Instagram "with an update that adds a redesigned camera, "re-vining", and 15 channels organize videos into themes including comedy, music, and nature." To check out their new added features, you can go to MakeUseOf.
